RANDA CHAHAL SABBAG

A pioneer in Lebanese cinema, the filmmaker Randa Chahal Sabbag passed away in 2008. Her body of work made of award-winning movies and documentaries was never made accessible in her country of origin. Ten years later, STORMstudio along with her family worked to highlight, promote and make her films accessible to the widest audience.

In 2018, we partnered with her long-time friend, collaborator and first assistant on her movies Véronique Labrid so honour Randa Chahal’s work. We contacted the production companies in order to reach deals for the movies to be online. We digitilized both CIVILISÉES and LES INFIDÈLES with the participation of ÉCLAIR NUMÉRISATION. We designed on the relaunch of her website, social media account.

And finally we launched a full retrospective articulated around a series of events including screenings, roundtables and exhibitions all over Lebanon and France.
The retrospective was launched on April 2018 and ended in Beirut in June 2018.

The films and documentaries are circulating in numerous festivals all over the world both for in-person screenings and online streaming.

STORM s t u d i o was in charge of the organisation and production of the retrospective. That meant digging into the incredible archives, going treasure hunting to find who owns the copyrights and organizing everything so it become seamless for future events.

We stem the idea with Randa’s family and supervised the creative direction for all communication material.

Randa Chahal Sabbag’s work is essential for Lebanese Cinema. One of the few woman filmmaker of the region at that time, her movies always aim for the discomfort, the thought provoking subject. The feedbacks at the retrospective were moving and supported the need for more initiatives of that subject.

Today, we are working on the dissemination of her work through a website, online access options and events making her work accessible to the widest audience.
The project is ongoing.
